Silamas Group has handled the loading of two gas scrubbers, weighing 2,100 tons (1,905 tonnes) each, for the Takehara coal-fired power station in Japan.
Manufactured by Slot-Nankai in Thailand, the scrubbers measured 16 m x 3.61 m x 36 m.
Using Goldhofer modules, Silamas transported the scrubbers 800 m from the factory to a nearby quay where they were loaded onto a barge.
“In view of the enormous weight and dimensions of the units, we finally opted for two 24-axle parallel combinations controlled by a single operator,” explained Teeraphap Juntorn, engineering manager at Silamas.
The trailer combinations included Goldhofer’s PST/SL heavy-duty modules as well as axle lines from the manufacturer’s THP/SL series.
According to Juntorn, one particular challenge of the project was the different types of vehicles deployed, which had to be coordinated from a synchronised transport unit. To do this, Silamas used Goldhofer’s Hydronic system.
The computerised hydraulic steering control unit enabled the THP/SL modules to be synchronised with the electronic steering systems of the self-propelled vehicles.
Upon arrival at the quay, the scrubbers were driven onto the barge.
Due to the limited space available at the loading point, the 40 m-long combination had to approach the barge at an angle before the scrubbers were placed on the foundation installed in the middle of the barge.
