Big Carl has lifted the 245-tonne domed roof onto the first reactor building.

Earlier this month, the crane positioned the 750-tonne polar crane into place. The polar heavy-duty crane will rotate 360 degrees at the top of the building and will be used to install heavy equipment during construction, such as the reactor. It will also be used when the power station is operational for refuelling and maintenance.

With the 245-tonne steel dome now in place, the first nuclear reactor can be installed at the site next year. Measuring 14 m-tall, it sits atop of the 44 m-high reactor building. It is made up of 38 prefabricated panels that were shipped to Hinkley Point C and welded together in an onsite factory.
