Heavy transport specialist Kübler Spedition has put its STB 320 high girder bridge to use for the first time, transporting a 285-tonne transformer to the Weier substation near Offenburg, Germany.
Kübler Spedition developed the STB 320 with heavy-duty trailer manufacturer TII Scheuerle last year and built it earlier this year, Its first job with the new gear was to move a transformer for electricity transmission system operator TransnetBW. As part of the energy transition in southern Germany, the power grid at the Weier substation is being increased from 220 kV to 380 kV.
The STB 320 high girder bridge was specifically designed for transformer transport. This made it ideally suited to the obstacles that this project posed: bridge weaknesses meant only one transport route was feasible – first by train to Offenburg, then further by road. Two sensitive bridges also had to be crossed.
