Indiana River & Rail Terminals has managed the barge-to-truck transload of oversized cargo at the port of Indiana-Mount Vernon, with the units destined for a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility under construction in central Indiana.
The shipment consisted of two 51-ton (46.3-tonne) specialised tanks built in the Houston metro area. They measured 44 ft x 18 ft (13.4 m x 5.5 m).
Barnhart Crane & Rigging arranged the barge shipment from Texas to Mount Vernon via the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Mississippi River and Ohio River. Upon arrival, Indiana River & Rail Terminals transloaded each tank onto Barnhart’s specialised heavy-haul trucks for the final leg of the journey.
The port of Indiana–Mount Vernon is one of three facilities operated by Ports of Indiana, along with Burns Harbor and Jeffersonville — all of which are designated foreign trade zones (FTZs).
Aiming to expand its FTZ programme, and offer services for companies dealing with challenges related to international trade and tariffs, the company recently appointed Dexter Salenda to the newly created role of foreign trade and economic development director.
Salenda has nearly 15 years of experience in transportation, supply chain and FTZ sales and operations from positions with DHL Global Forwarding, DB Schenker and INzone – the Greater Indianapolis FTZ operated by the Indianapolis Airport Authority.
“Bringing Dexter on board marks a strategic expansion for Ports of Indiana in the supply chain services we provide to international businesses and the state,” said Ports of Indiana ceo Jody Peacock. “His efforts will help us establish long-term partnerships with Indiana customers that are doing business all over the world – especially those that can benefit from the cost savings and operational efficiencies related to tariffs and container services.”
