Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor has broken ground at what is the first new warehouse constructed at the port in 25 years.
The project – valued at USD10 million – will see an 84,000 sq ft (7,803.9 sq m) warehouse and a 1.65 acre (0.67 ha) laydown yard adjacent to Burns Harbor’s berth 2, with the facility occupying four acres (1.62-ha) of undeveloped land along the port’s east harbour arm. This adds to the port’s 640,000 sq ft (59,457.9 sq m) of warehouse space distributed across five buildings.
“We’re excited to break ground on the port’s first new warehouse in 25 years and expand our capacity for handling critical cargoes,” said Ports of Indiana ceo Jody Peacock. “The berth 2 warehouse is a key component of USD77 million in multimodal expansion at Burns Harbor, and it will provide customers with greater supply chain flexibility and new export opportunities.”
Overall, Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor is a 600 acre (242.8 ha) site which handles an average of 3 million tonnes of cargo annually.
The new warehouse is expected to open in early 2026.
