Wind turbine blades measuring 70 m in length have passed through the port of Townsville in Australia, bound for the Kennedy Energy Park in Hughenden.
The shipment of 36 blades, weighing a total of 3,500 tonnes, arrived at the port from China and will form part of the large-scale hybrid power plant.
The AUD160 million (USD122.3 million) Kennedy Energy Park project combines 12 wind turbines, measuring 200 m tall; 55,000 solar panels; and a 4 MW lithium-ion battery storage system from Tesla.
Port of Townsville’s general manager business development, Claudia Brumme-Smith, said the arrival of the blades showcased the capability of the port in facilitating complicated cargo movements.
The project is being developed by Windlab and Japan’s Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation, with Vestas providing the wind turbines and control software.
According to Peter Cowling, head of Vestas Australia and New Zealand, the wind farm is scheduled to come online towards the end of 2018.
