Freight forwarder TSL Australia, in partnership with Hawk Ellery New Zealand, has transported 91 oversized timber arches from Auckland to Melbourne. Across three part-charter sailings, TSL had to develop tailored lifting plans to support the arched geometry of the beams and overcome strict biosecurity requirements.

The 91 timber arches varied from 7 m long up to 30 m, with some having an arch width of 6 m. “The primary challenge laid in the arched geometry of the beams, which demanded meticulous attention to lifting, stowage, and transport,” said TSL.

Developing tailored lifting plans, the arches were handled using a double-sling technique that helped with the weight distribution.

The stringent Australian biosecurity requirements added to the complexity, with on-wharf fumigation needed in Auckland. A unified berth and fumigation zone were carefully selected to streamline road delivery, fumigation, and vessel loading at a single location, significantly reducing risk and port movement.

Maintaining flexibility was critical, TSL added, as the team navigated real-time operational changes and tight fumigation windows with transparent communication and stakeholder coordination.

Early engagement with the Australian Quarantine Authority ensured seamless clearance upon arrival. “The project – spanning over six months – demonstrated that strategic risk management, proactive planning, and strong inter-agency cooperation are fundamental in delivering complex breakbulk solutions,” said TSL.
