Mammoet swivels to success

November 7 - Mammoet has transported nine process modules from the Port of Anacortes to Andeavor's refinery in Washington, USA for the latter's clean product upgrade project.

The modules, which arrived at the port from the Philippines, were transloaded from the ship and transported to a laydown yard and staged.

The cargoes weighed 240,000 lbs (108.9 tonnes) each and were transported to the installation site using a combination of 18 axle lines of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) and a trailer with a push truck.

"The addition of traffic light swivels saved time for the module moves," says Mammoet. "These swivels allow the signals to be turned in place allowing a load to pass. The signals would then be turned back to their original position. This approach eliminated the need to disconnect power and remove the signals."

The modules will form part of Andeavor's naphtha hydrotreating unit and a new isomerization unit.

In a separate project, Mammoet transported and installed a replacement vessel at a plant in Alberta, Canada, on behalf of a manufacturer of agriculture fertiliser and industrial nitrogen.

Mammoet coordinated the transport of the vessel from Austria using river barges, sea vessels and railcars.

Once the vessel arrived in Alberta, Mammoet removed the old R-101 vessel, weighing 410 tonnes, using a 1,350-tonne lifting capacity Liebherr LR 11350 crane. The units were lifted to a height of 72 m through the roof of the facility.
