Nigeria targets unlicenced forwarders

January 29 - Reports in the Africa press suggest that the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarders in Nigeria (CRFFN) is starting to register all freight forwarders in the country and warned that those who are not registered will not be allowed to

The reports indicate that at a meeting between the CRFFN and local forwarder associations, a spokesman for the CRFFN said the practice of freight forwarding needs to be 'sanitised'.

HLPFI understands that the CRFFN's objective is that no organisation or company will be able to practice as a freight forwarder in Nigeria unless it is registered by the Council.

Asked to comment on the potential effect on his company's operations in the country, a well known multinational forwarder said that it is very hard not to be cynical about this. "They can pass as many laws as they like, but people will find ways around them."
