ALS powers Scottish wind farm projects

January 19 - Abnormal Load Services (ALS) has provided UK port and vessel agency services for three N80 R 60 wind turbines destined for Lairg Wind Farm near Invergordon in the Scottish Highlands and supported the importing of phase 1 material for Drone Hi

For the Lairg Wind Farm project, expected to produce enough energy to supply over 3,500 homes, ALS facilitated the use of mobile cranes for the 801 tonne cargo as a gearless vessel had been fixed as a more cost-effective method than a heavy lift vessel for this shipment. To overcome extreme congestion at the port, ALS identified and provided alternative laydown and storage facilities at a site a short distance from the port.

For the first phase of the Drone Hill Wind Farm, ALS used both mobile and port cranes to discharge and place intosequential quayside storage of nine wind turbine towers from three vessels. Phase 2 is planned to take place in Spring 2012 and consists of a further 13 towers to complete the project.

The 22 1.3 MW turbines are expected to power 16,000 homes.
