September 25 - Bornheim, Germany based Viktor Baumann recently coordinated the transportation and installation of a three-part column to the Cologne region.

Each column section weighed 160-tonnes and measured 10 m in diameter. Sabine Baumann-Duvenbeck, managing director at Viktor Baumann, said that the components were manufactured in Belgium by Ellimetal, and due to their wide diameter they were shipped to Germany by barge.

The offloading operation was achieved using two floating cranes, owned by Hebo Maritime, in Mühlheim on the Ruhr River. Each column section was then moved to the project site on a combination of 8-axle self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT), and 2x6 axle DC coupled SPMT.

Turntables were necessary to manoeuvre the loads on site, due to space limitations. Viktor Baumann then assembled and positioned the column on its foundations using a Terex SL 3800 super lift crane, alongside a Liebherr LTM 500 all-terrain crane. The column will form part of a petrochemical complex under construction by Ineos.
