Moray Council in Scotland has agreed a masterplan for Buckie Harbour that will see it expand its operations, with capabilities for offshore wind vessels.
Located on the south side of the Moray Firth coastline, Buckie Harbour is an established commercial port with four basins. The masterplan, according to Moray Council, sets the stage “for major developments that will support the long-term aspirations of the region”.
In addition to offshore wind vessels, the masterplan expansion will also cater to cargo, fishing and cruise vessels. The plan includes options for extended quayside access, including heavy lift capabilities and laydown areas.
Chair of Moray Council’s economic development and infrastructure services committee, Marc Macrae, said: “This is a big step forward for Buckie and for Moray… The potential for Buckie, and Moray, to become a successful hub for the maritime sector is huge and I can’t wait to see how this project transforms our offering.
“The council will now begin working with partners, including Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the offshore renewables industry, to bring the plan to life and attract investment to make the plan a reality.”
Buckie Harbour currently serves operations and maintenance craft associated with the Beatrice Demonstrator turbines and has previously supported other offshore energy developments. “Buckie Harbour has the capacity, supply chain links and geographic location to embrace further expansion in this area,” said Moray Council.
There will now be a four-week consultation on the masterplan with local stakeholders.
