Norway-based service performance and benchmarking analyst Esgian is partnering with the Smart Freight Centre (SFC), and its Global Ro-Ro Community (GRC) working group, to support its latest emissions transparency initiative.

During April, several members of the GRC established guidelines for calculating GHG emission intensity for ro-ro ships.

The group decided on the creation of an emissions intensity table covering 27 specific trade lanes, with average emission factors per operator. These values will be derived from verified operator-submitted data, forming a common reference point for emissions performance across the ro-ro sector.

Esgian is joining the initiative to develop a platform for primary emissions data and commercial intelligence. “For this solution to function at scale – reliably, securely, and transparently – a purpose-built digital platform is essential,” the analyst explained.

The platform will facilitate the entire data lifecycle: starting with the structured submissions from vessel operators, through to transparent and traceable verification, smart data processing pipelines, and stakeholder-ready outputs and insights.

“As the frequency and precision of data submissions evolve, this system will scale with it – strengthening the foundation for accountability, benchmarking, and meaningful action on maritime emissions,” Esgian added.

Already an SFC-accredited partner, Esgian employs a methodological approach aligned with the GLEC framework, covering both ro-ro and multipurpose (MPP) modes.

“With Esgian’s focus on ro-ro and MPP, a next natural step would be to develop the same for the MPP sector once the stakeholders are ready,” the company added.
