During April, several ro-ro operators in conjunction with the Smart Freight Centre (SFC) established guidelines for calculating GHG emission intensity for ro-ro ships.
The carriers – including Eastern Car Liner, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), Wallenius Wilhelmsen and ClassNK – introduced the guidelines, which comprise a common calculation method. This, according to the carriers, will enable shippers to accurately measure Scope 3 emissions and will further promote decarbonisation.
The six carriers, which also established the Global Ro-Ro Community (GRC), said that the model was developed through open discussions with stakeholders, including shipping companies, shippers and third-party verification organisations. The standard model complies with the ISO 14083 and Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) framework.
In the future, the SFC plans to collect data on environmental performance on a ship-by-ship basis and publish average high-precision emission intensity data for the industry.
