Locomotion at ABP Newport

February 24 - The last shipment of seven class 66 locomotives has arrived at ABP's Port of Newport from Indiana, USA on BigLift Shipping's vessel Happy Dragon.

The locomotives were part of a larger shipment of units, manufactured at the Electro-Motive Diesel factory in the USA and destined for delivery to GB Railfreight, which is expanding its fleet. On arrival at Newport, the units were discharged directly onto the port's railway line for transport to Doncaster.

ABP says that the Port of Newport's rail infrastructure means that locomotives can be lifted straight from the vessel onto rail tracks for transport within the UK's national rail network.

According to ABP, the first class 66 locomotives arrived in the UK via the Port of Immingham in 1998, but shipments of the railcars have since shifted to the Port of Newport due to its rail links.
