August 29 - The Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) has reported that the Illinois Department of Transportation has introduced a new automated permitting system for oversize and overweight loads.

The Illinois Transportation Automated Permitted (ITAP) system accepts online applications for oversize and overweight permits and allows for online payment via credit card, electronic funds transfer, and escrow and bonded accounts.

The system also electronically issues permits. One of its core features is a navigation system based on Geographic Information System (GIS), which selects optimum routes based on user-entered information on vehicle origin and destination, as well as vehicle dimensions, obstructions, and restrictions at the time of the proposed move.

The overall purposes of ITAP are to streamline the process for issuing permits and provide a mechanism to more effectively notify local jurisdictions when a permit is issued.

This helps jurisdictions know when oversize and overweight vehicles or loads might traverse local roadways. By providing applicants with local jurisdiction contact information, ITAP also helps operators communicate more efficiently with jurisdictions.
