Peel Ports Group has officially unveiled its new GBP30 million (USD40.61 million) ro-ro berth at London Medway.
“This major new addition to our infrastructure will bring huge benefits to the port and the wider supply chain, as well as future-proof our operations here for many years to come,” said Richard Goffin, port director – South East ports at Peel Ports. “The new berth and its facilities will further improve operational efficiency and enhance flexibility for our customers.”
One of Finnlines’ new Finneco-class hybrid ro-ro vessels was welcomed to London Medway as part of the official opening. The vessel is part of the weekly service connecting London Medway with Finland, Poland, Belgium and Spain. Each vessel has a cargo capacity of 5,800 lane m or equivalent to around 400 trailers.
Peel Ports said the new pontoon is capable of handling project cargo, construction machinery and building materials, among other things. It added that the development will also support the continued growth of the port operator’s customers such as Volkswagen and Ceva, who use London Medway as the primary location for their southern UK operations.
Further investments are expected to be made at the port in coming years, including new rail connections to improve movement of freight in and out of the site.
Last month, HLPFI reported that Peel Ports Clydeport boosted its wind turbine handling capacity.
