Samson debuts synthetic crane rope

March 4 - Manitowoc Cranes has debuted its Grove RT770E rough-terrain crane utilising Samson's KZ 100 - the first synthetic hoist rope designed specifically for mobile cranes.

KZ 100 is a joint product of Samson and Manitowoc, supported by fibre supplier DSM Dyneema, and signifies Samson's entry into the crane industry, explained Michael Quinn, Samson's director of new market development, claiming: "Together, we were able to leverage the experience and technical expertise of both research and development teams to bring the market something that is completely new and offers numerous benefits to the end user."

Samson explained that KZ 100 is a lightweight alternative to traditional steel wire rope. With the same load pull and load chart as steel wire, KZ 100 can be used with a 5:1 safety factor; it is also 80 percent lighter than the wire it replaces making for easier handling, reaving and installation, says Samson.

Synthetic KZ 100 does not rust and requires no lubing, and its construction eliminates kinking, bird caging and damage caused by diving on the winch drum. Furthermore, its torque-neutral construction eliminates load spin and cabling, the company added.
