Multipurpose shipping line Spliethoff has confirmed that a crew member of its vessel Minervagracht has died following the September 29 attack in the Gulf of Aden.

As HLPFI reported last week, the vessel was hit by an unknown explosive device in the international waters of the Gulf of Aden. Houthis have since claimed responsibility of the attack, with the ship suffering significant damage.

All 19 crew members of Minervagracht were evacuated to nearby vessels, with two of the crew sustaining injuries and receiving medical attention.

In a statement on October 6, Spliethoff said: “Earlier today, our colleague passed away in hospital from the critical injuries sustained during the attack on our vessel in the Gulf of Aden on 29 September.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones. Our thoughts are with them as they face this unimaginable loss, and we will continue to offer all possible support during this difficult time.

“The events of last week have left a profound impact on everyone at Spliethoff. Today’s news has deeply saddened everyone at the company, as we mourn the loss of a respected and valued seafarer.

“Most of the crew of Minervagracht have now been safely repatriated to their home countries. One crew member remains under medical care in Djibouti; his condition is stable, and we expect he will be able to return home later this week.

“Finally, we wish to express our sincere appreciation to the crew, and their families for the strength and resilience they have shown throughout this ordeal. We are thankful to the authorities and all those who assisted in the rescue and repatriation of our crew.”

International Maritime Organization (IMO) secretary general Arsenio Dominguez called for an end to assaults on international shipping and urged dialogue to resolve tensions. “My thoughts, along with those of the secretariat and of the entire membership of the IMO, are with the family of the crew member.

“I strongly condemn any type of attack against international shipping, regardless of its motivation or cause. These deplorable attacks in the Red Sea violate international law and freedom of navigation. Innocent seafarers and local populations are the main victims of these attacks and the pollution they cause. Constructive dialogue is the solution to resolving ongoing geopolitical crises affecting seafarers and international shipping.”
