December 21 - Chapman Freeborn recently transported 95 tonnes of seamless steel tubes and couplings from Osaka, Japan to Houston, USA for a client in the oil and gas industry.

From it's Singapore office, Chapman Freeborn coordinated the urgent transport. The oversize cargo presented a unique challenge for Chapman Freeborn as each tube measure 12.2 m in length. A B747 freighter was chartered and the broker worked closely with loadmasters to take full advantage of the capacity of the aircraft, so the maximum number of tubes and couplings could be moved in one flight.

Due to the size and scale of the cargo, three 12.2 pallets were constructed airside - directly in front of the chartered aircraft. The cargo was moved airside using seven flatbed trucks.

Chapman Freeborn was responsible for coordinating arrangements for on site personnel and specialist heavy lift equipment to ensure a smooth loading process.

Anton Lomakin, senior manager at Chapman Freeborn Singapore, said: "Besides the challenges faced in the loading process, we also need to consider how g-forces affect cargo when the aircraft accelerates or brakes during take-off and landing."

The company's specialist team ensured the steel tubing was carefully lego-stacked and the necessary structures were in place to lock down the heavy cargo, to prevent displacement during flight.

"Challenging charters give us the opportunity to demonstrate our expertise in providing innovative solutions and we are happy that we are able provide a unique charter solution that fits the client's requirements and timescale." Anton added.
