Contract signed for Merkur go-ahead

July 3 - Merkur Offshore has signed a binding turbine supply agreement and balance of plant contract with Alstom and DEME for the construction of the Merkur Offshore wind farm, writes Isabel Freedman.

Alstom will supply and deliver the 66 Haliade 150-6MW offshore wind turbines and DEME will then carry out the installation. Additionally, Alstom has signed a long-term service and maintenance contract.

Construction of the 400 MW Merkur Offshore wind farm, located 45 km north of Borkum in the North Sea, will begin in 2016. This will be undertaken by GeoSea, a member of the DEME Group.

One Haliade 150-6MW turbine, with its high energy yield and thanks to its 150 m diameter rotor, can supply clean wind power to the equivalent of about 5,000 households, "contributing significantly to Germany's energy transition plans and the European clean energy targets," says Jérôme Pécresse, president of Alstom Renewable Power.

Alain Bernard, director and ceo of the DEME Group further stated: "Combining favourable sea bed conditions with one of the strongest and most reliable wind resources in the world, Merkur Offshore will be one of Germany's largest wind farms in the North Sea."

Merkur Offshore is a joint venture company of DEME Concessions Wind and the Windreich Group, created to build and operate the offshore wind projects.
