Egytrans forecasts wind growth

February 14 - Egytrans expects further growth in the wind energy sector in Egypt, as it claims that wind turbine transportation is one of the most promising fields for the company.

According to Egytrans, the Ministry of Electricity in Egypt has set a target for 20 percent of the total energy produced in 2022 to be from renewable sources. The Egyptian company claims that 12 percent of the renewable energy will be from wind power plants, as more than 1,200 MW has been added in 2016 or is due to be added in 2017.

Egytrans was contracted by the Spanish company Gamesa to transport 110 towers and a turbine, as well as supporting components, to a wind farm with a production capacity of 220 MW. The contract was fulfilled last year.

Egytrans was also contracted by German forwarder, LPL, to handle cargoes for two power station developments - Beni Suef and New Capital.

Egytrans handled approximately 400,000 freight tonnes as well as gas turbines and gas turbine generators, which weighed up to 482 tons (437 tonnes) per package. Under the contract, Egytrans handled the civil works required to transport the consignments from the ports of arrival to the project sites, as well as the preparation of road and bridge reinforcement and communication with the Egyptian authorities.

Egytrans utilised its 10,000 sq m yard inside the Port of Adabiya, storing the general cargo and heavy packages there for eight months.

In a separate project, Egytrans signed a contract to transport three steam boilers and three turbines, as well as condensers, generators and supplementary equipment for the South Helwan power station.

The handling and transport of the equipment began in the second quarter of 2016 and the power station, which according to Egytrans has a total capacity of 1,950 MW, is expected to be completed in December 2017.
