July 4 - Rhenus Alpina has acquired the general cargo business of Sweden's Loomis Group, which includes the individual operating units of Mat Transport, Bonafide Logistic, Via Mat (France) and O.Lisboa Despachos Internacionais.

Loomis entered the general cargo business in 2014 when it acquired the Via Mat Group of Companies. Loomis said that the divested operations, which offer international cargo services by air, sea, road and rail, are "deemed none-core" for the group.

The 149 employees of the affected companies - 117 of whom are employed in Switzerland - will be integrated into Rhenus Alpina, where Rhenus says their existing employment conditions will be continued.

According to Rhenus, the existing service portfolio of the acquired general cargo business units will be fully covered in the future, and even expanded in certain areas in the medium-term.

"This takeover will enable Rhenus Alpina to expand its spectrum of services further, as well as strengthen its market presence in attractive growth areas," claimed Rhenus Alpina ceo Andreas Stöckli.
