During its virtual annual general meeting, the board of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) reappointed Esben Poulsson to serve a further two years as chairman.

The meeting – held on September 15 – also saw Gerardo Borromeo appointed as vice chair, succeeding Mark Martecchini.

Poulsson assumed the role of chairman in 2016. ICS said he has overseen the engagement with international bodies, national governments, and industry organisations on the key issues impacting international shipping – such as the transition to low sulphur fuels, and the Covid-19 seafarer repatriation crisis.

Speaking after his appointment, Poulsson said: “The Covid-19 pandemic means 2020 is a year that will long be remembered, and this is certainly true for shipping.

“As countries shut down borders and impose travel restrictions, the role of the sector in facilitating trade and the maintenance and improvement of global living standards has never been more important.”
