Trailer manufacturer Cometto has integrated a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) into its self-propelled vehicles, improving safety and efficiency in SPMT operations.

Cometto said that it is the first manufacturer to integrate the system, which largely replaces a manual operation that would typically take hours; for 64 axle lines, an operator has to check 256 tyres, which at an estimated time of three minutes per tyre equates to 13 hours of inspection work.

After inspection, if tyres then have to be inflated, further time and effort is required before an SPMT operation can commence. With the TPMS integrated, the technology automatically detects whether a tyre needs to be inflated, eliminating the time spent inspecting the individual tyres.

The TPMS uses wireless high-performance sensors that are integrated directly into the wheel rims and are equipped with easily replaceable batteries. The sensors and receiver are designed for long battery life, ensuring reliable operation for extended periods of time. Each SPMT module is equipped with a display that shows the tyre pressure values – even when the module is unpowered and not connected to the powerpack.

Cometto said that this enables “predictive maintenance, reduces tyre wear and minimises downtimes”.

“It increases safety by reducing the risk of tyre explosions and maintaining a constant pressure. This significantly optimises performance and reliability in every application,” the manufacturer added.
