German transmission system operator Amprion has taken delivery of a custom-made heavy-duty railway wagon from Kübler Heavy Rail.

Measuring more than 50 m long, 4.2 m high and 3 m wide, the 32-axle wagon is capable of moving heavy transformers by rail.

“The wagon has been developed as a systematic lightweight construction so that it has the lowest possible deadweight and can therefore carry a lot,” explains Amprion railway operations manager Henrik Kastner.

Manufactured by Kübler Heavy Rail in Baden-Württemberg, with final assembly taking place in Saxony and testing in the Czech Republic, the wagon is capable of handling 220 tonnes.

“It is very agile and can even be moved from rail to road, which gives us additional flexibility for future transformer transports,” added Kastner.
