May 11 - Optimarin has signed contracts with Hoëgh Autoliners and Wisby Tankers to install its ballast water treatment (BWT) systems on five existing vessels.

The company will install its Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) units on three bitumen tankers for Wisby and two of Hoëgh Autoliners' ro-ro vessels later this year. The Hoëgh Autoliners vessels will be fitted with 344 cu m and 500 cu m capacity systems.

According to Optimarin, the Norwegian ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist became the first company to win US Coast Guard (USCG) approval for its systems six months ago.

Optimarin ceo, Tore Andersen, said: "The retrofitting of systems is a business area that is going to explode very soon. Industry sources expect over USD45 billion to be spent in the sector in the coming five years.
