The giant Sarens SGC 250 ring crane is ready to start construction work at EDF’s Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.

Named Big Carl, the SGC 250 will play in a key role in constructing the nuclear power plant. Running along 6 km of rail track, the crane will lift 700 pieces – the largest items weighing 1,600 tonnes.

In its tallest configuration, the crane stands 250 m tall. It is powered by 12 engines and supported by 52 counterweight containers weighing 100 tonnes each.

The crane will complete the civil works on behalf of BYLOR, a joint venture between Laing O’Rourke and Bouygues.
