UK-based heavy transport provider Collett & Sons has delivered six 158-tonne diesel engines from Dublin port to Orion Business Park in North Dublin.

Each delivery set off at 11:00 pm.

With each piece measuring 13.4 m x 3.4 m x 4.7 m, the engines were initially received at Dublin port and shunted across to a secure storage location until the scheduled delivery. To accommodate the challenging weight and dimensions of the cargo, Collett built its 250-tonne capacity Goldhofer girder bridge trailer around each engine at the port.

They were transporting using the 20-axle girder bridge trailer, with each delivery setting off at 11:00 pm to guarantee a safe passage of the oversized loads through Dublin, all while adhering to a surveyed route, with both Irish police escorts and private escorts. The route surveys identified the need for street furniture removal and modifications, while a car park needed to be prepared for transhipment and the ground assessed to ensure it could support the load. A new access gate also had to be built to allow the engines to enter the site on SPMTs.

Collett split the project into two phases, delivering three engines in the first phase and the remaining three in the second phase. Along the 15 mile (24.1 km) route from the port to site, a combination of rerouting and contraflow manoeuvres were required to navigate tight turns and low-clearance areas.

Collett split the projects into two phases, each time delivering three engines.

Each engine was steered into a transhipment area within Orion Business Park, with a 10-axle SPMT configuration used for the final stage of the delivery. Executed by Collett’s subcontractor, each piece was then positioned onto its final plinth using jacking equipment. During the transhipment process, Collett’s girder bridge trailer was dismantled and returned to the port, rebuilt and loaded with the next engine.

Last month, Collett purchased Goldhofer Stepstar trailers, with delivery expected next month.
