Two Liebherr crawler cranes supplied by Emil Egger have erected Switzerland’s second-largest wind farm.

Switzerland has been a notoriously difficult country to develop wind energy project within, with just a quarter of percent of the country’s power generated by this renewable source. St. Gallen-based Emil Egger mobilised an LR 11000 and an LR 1700-1.0 to the Jura mountain range in the canton of Vaud near the border with France to install six Enercon units.

The crane operator equipped the machine with a 114 m-long main boom in order to be able to handle the greatest assembling heights of around 100 m. With a gross weight of 65 tonnes, the rotors were somewhat lighter, but visually more spectacular than the generator or nacelle. The 40 m-long rotor blades were mounted to the hub on the ground to form complete blade stars, lifted and installed. With a special device, these huge components could be swivelled into a vertical position during the lifting process.

The works took place at an altitude of 1,200 m.
