Heavy transport engineering specialist Sarens has completed a landmark decommissioning project at the Wergeland Base in Gulen, Norway using a Liebherr LR 12500-1.0 crawler crane.
The project involved the lifting, transport, and re-immersion of four massive footings, which each weighed 1,850 tonnes and measured 25 m x 27 m. The crawler crane was configured with an 80 m-long main boom, a 35 m superlift radius, 1,240 tonnes of superlift weight and a 2,000-tonne capacity shackle (designed to meet the unique demands of the project) to lift the units out of the water.
”Lifting such a weight with a single crawler crane is an exceptionally rare feat in Europe and may well be a record-breaking achievement,” Sarens said.
The work also required various axle lines of SPMTs to transport the components to a quay.
Sarens was selected for its cost-efficient and highly specialised solution, it said. By extending the contract of the 2,500-tonne capacity LR 12500-1.0 crane, already deployed at the site, Sarens was able to complete the project while minimising costs for its client.
