Steil Kranarbeiten has utilised its Terex CC 3800-1 crawler crane to lift bridge parts in Eppelborn, Germany.
As part of the demolition of the old Illtal motorway bridge on the A1, Steil Kranarbeiten configured its 650-tonne capacity crawler crane with Terex’s split tray system that allows the counterweight to be moved without the need for an additional crane.
Due to the insufficient storage space for all of the crane parts on the construction site, René Perlich, head of large cranes at Steil Kranarbeiten, explained: “The setup of the crane required a sophisticated logistics concept, whereby we delivered the parts just-in-time with 52 transports in order to install them immediately.”
The crane was configured with a 72 m SSL1 boom and 11.5 m superlift radius, and was fitted with 225 tonnes of counterweight on the crane plus 325 tonnes of superlift counterweight.
To support the CC 3800-1, concrete had to be poured in the surrounding bank area to compensate for the unstable soil at the construction site.
After the crane was ready for lifting, Steil Kranarbeiten lifted the bridge sections, which were divided into seven segments measuring up to 21 m long and 12 m wide.
“We picked up the heavy loads with extremely wide radii of up to 36 m and then placed them behind the crane with a reduced radius of about 14 m,” explained Perlich.
