July 19 - Scientists from the Emden-Leer University in Germany have visited Fehn Ship Management's general cargo vessel Fehn Pollux in preparation for the installation of a Flettner rotor.

According to Fehn Ship Management, Fehn Pollux will become the first ship to be equipped with a Flettner rotor developed in Leer.

After extensive tests on land, the rotor will now be tested onboard the ship following extensive pre-calculations and planning - which will be undertaken by the university scientists.

The rotor - Eco Flattener WHC - is an 18 m high rotating cylinder, which has a diameter of 3 m.

After the installation, scientists will monitor the rotor's performance and investigate how much wind energy adds to the vessel's forward thrust, and how much fuel can be saved by using the rotor.
