HLPFI understands that investigations are continuing into an incident at the port of Rostock that occurred last week, which saw a wind turbine monopile foundation fall whilst being lifted on board a heavy lift vessel via the ship's crane.

One seaman suffered minor injuries when the lifting operation failed, leaving the 700-tonne module lodged between the ship and the quayside.

The unit was being loaded on board a SAL Heavy Lift vessel. According to Christian Hoffmann, head of marketing and communications, the Hamburg-based carrier is very experienced in this type of lifting operation having undertaken more than 200 of this nature.

The incident caused some damage to the quayside but there was no environmental damage.

The monopile was safely lifted shore side on Friday night. The heavy lift ship involved in the incident, Svenja, is already operational and will continue working on the project today. A full investigation as to the cause of the incident will now take place.

Hoffman added: “We do not expect the incident to have any significant impact on the project schedule.”
