Sun shines with Chipolbrok

Chipolbrok has delivered a range of heavy and oversized components using its vessel Chipolbrok Sun, including 56 wind turbine tower sections in Piteå, Sweden.

After departing from China, the multipurpose vessel called at Adabiyah, Egypt and Maroc, Morocco to discharge components before heading to Tangier to offload rubber-tyred gantry cranes that were stowed on deck.

However, the majority of the cargo – the turbine tower sections – was destined for northern Sweden.

Each section had a maximum length of 30.7 m and unit weights up to 61 tonnes. The components are part of a large wind energy project, which consists of 179 wind turbines in total. According to Chipolbrok, 60 units were delivered in 2018 and the remaining 119 units in 2019.

The shipping line said that it does not normally add extra port calls this close to the polar circle. However: “Given the unusual circumstances, as well as the dedication to deliver the best possible service and coverage to our clients, the Chipolbrok Sun has taken up the challenge of shipping this big volume of almost 25,000 freight tons to this rather unchartered territory.”

The cargoes were offloaded in two days and Chipolbrok Sun has now continued on its eastbound voyage where it will call at Antwerp (Belgium), Hamburg (Germany) and Huelva (Spain) to load a mix of general, project, breakbulk and bulk cargoes destined for the Far East.
