The management contract was signed on December 20, 2023 in the presence of government ministers and the port authority Enaport. AGL said that the port will be modernised, with the support of container shipping line MSC, with the introduction of new technologies and modern management practices.

“AGL will be a strategic partner to strengthen the efficiency of our port, addressing operational challenges for the benefit of our economy and local communities,” said Adelino Fernandes Rosa Cardoso, minister of infrastructure of São Tomé and Príncipe.

The company is improving its port and terminal coverage and capabilities across the continent. During October 2023, AGL was revealed as the successful bidder to operate the Lobito container and multipurpose terminal in Angola. The port will be involved in the development of agricultural projects and construction sites, while supporting service companies. AGL said it hopes to benefit from the country’s 1,300 km Benguela railway network, and a future railway line to Zambia. It plans to invest some EUR100 million (USD110 million) at the port and the concession agreement was scheduled to become live in Q1 2024.

During December AGL was also busy moving project cargoes arriving from Australia to Gabon. 55 tonnes of mining equipment was destined for the Belinga mine. The cargoes were received at the port of Owendo and moved to the inland mine via Booué.
