Kalmar – part of Cargotec – will deliver four electric forklifts and two hybrid straddle carriers to the port of Bridgetown, Barbados.

Managed by Barbados Port, Bridgetown’s terminals handle containers; liquid and dry bulk; breakbulk cargoes; and vehicles. The equipment forms part of a capital investment that will modernise the port’s facilities.

The electric forklifts, which Kalmar said provides the performance of a diesel truck without the emissions, will be used in breakbulk operations, moving cargo such as steel, cement, lumber and poles.

The Kalmar hybrid straddle carriers are powered by lithium-ion battery technology. According to Kalmar, the units will help to speed up vessel turnaround times and deliver savings in terms of fuel, CO2 emissions and noise pollution.

The units are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2020.
