May 27 - Italian steel manufacturer Cimolai - which was responsible for the construction of the 16 new Panama Canal lock gates - has established its own dedicated specialised transport division, Cimolai Heavy Lift.

Cimolai project manager, Giovanni Petrafesa, told HLPFI at the Breakbulk Europe exhibition this week that the manufacturer had decided to establish the division due to its experience with the Panama Canal gates project.

Officially set up at the end of last year, Cimolai Heavy Lift has invested in 160 axle lines of Cometto SPMTs, as well as a number of cranes and specialised strand jacks, said Petrafesa.

The advantage of Cimolai Heavy Lift, according to Petrafesa, is that it can provide a full project service, including the manufacturing of equipment as well as the final transport and delivery to a jobsite.

Based in the Port of Monfalcone, Cimolai Heavy Lift currently has ten staff - all with engineering and manufacturing backgrounds.
