Jumbo joy at EMAS project

March 9 - Jumbo mobilised four of its heavy lift vessels to transport oversize materials for the construction of EMAS's subsea construction vessel Lewek Constellation.

Jumbo inked two major deals with EMAS for the transportation of several reels, each weighing 832 tonnes, and skidding drive materials from Vung Tau in Vietnam and Rotterdam to Pascagoula in the USA.

In order to get the construction materials to the USA in the right order, at the right time, Jumbo mobilised Jumbo Javelin to transport four reels; Fairpartner was used to lift two oversize reels onboard Jumbo Vision for oncarriage to the USA; while Fairline transported the skidding drive materials.

From the tendering phase onwards Jumbo partnered with EMAS to create the most efficient and safe solution, explained Jumbo's project manager Boudewijn van der Garden.

Jumbo had to take into account various factors to ensure the super-heavy cargoes were safely delivered. A shallow draught, limited space for upending the reels, and a short quay called for some customised engineering solutions.

Jumbo used its in-house 3-D software to demonstrate a dual crane lifting operation to EMAS, which was completed in three stages: upending of the reel; positioning the reel into the cradle; and lifting the cradle and reel combination onboard.

In order to complete loading operations on the Jumbo Javelin, two spreader beams were specially designed and fabricated by Jumbo. The spreader beams allowed the Jumbo Javelin to load four reels with a single lift. A video can be viewed below:

Lewek Constellation, which will be the latest addition to the EMAS fleet of pipelay and construction vessels, is designed to deliver complex projects in water depths exceeding 3,000 m.
