Modulift tackles Kraken

February 9 - Modulift has manufactured two bespoke subsea spreader beams for a company that is currently executing an engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract for EnQuest's Kraken oilfield development in the North Sea.

Modulift delivered the 303-tonne capacity, 6.8 m span spreaders to the subsea construction company on site, where the scope of the work includes template and manifold installation at three drill centres.

The spreaders will be used to lift the manifolds into position for stage one of the project, and will then go into storage for 6-12 months before being used on later stages of the development.

Liam Botting, new business development manager at Modulift, said: "This is a landmark project on which to showcase the engineering behind our new range of spreaders for subsea use. The range incorporates our drop link design to ensure the beam doesn't have any bending force through it-other than due to self-weight-thus reducing the overall size and weight of the beam, creating a more efficient design."

Botting added that the design features an open section to ensure that there are no issues with pressure equalisation, and that all surfaces can be covered with a high build epoxy paint suitable for subsea environments.

Prior to delivery of the spreader beams to the customer, each item of equipment was sent to DNV GL for inspection.

HLPFI
reported in January 2015 that Modulift had launched its new range of subsea modular spreader beams.
