September 20 - The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) recorded a 29 percent year-on-year drop in breakbulk volumes for the period covering January - August 2016.

The alliance - which includes the ports of Tacoma and Seattle - has handled 128,545 tonnes of breakbulk cargo during the past eight months, compared with 180,616 tonnes handled in the period ending August 2015.

NWSA attributed the slowdown in breakbulk volumes to the global downturn in agricultural, mining and construction equipment, as well as the strong US dollar.

Meanwhile, the seaport alliance appointed Nick Demerice to lead its public affairs team. In his new role, he will oversee the company's communications and government affairs departments.
