Savannah breakbulk volumes doubled

May 20 - Georgia's multipurpose facility in the Port of Savannah, Ocean Terminal, almost doubled its breakbulk cargo volumes in April, growing by 96.3 percent year-on-year to a total of 166,489 tonnes.

Georgia Ports Authority's (GPA) total breakbulk tonnage grew by 38.7 percent in April, from 89,946 tonnes in 2014 to 322,603 tonnes.

The GPA also saw strong growth in ro-ro traffic, moving 77,574 units through Brunswick and Savannah - a 14.1 percent rise compared with the previous year. Container volumes at the Port of Savannah also grew 25.8 percent in April.

The GPA board has also recently approved USD141.8 million in capital improvements, allocating USD33.4 million to improve power infrastructure for cranes, paving, increased rail capacity and other terminal developments at the ports of Savannah and Brunswick.

Another USD83.4 million has been assigned to property development and the purchase of new equipment, including USD33 million for 30 new rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs). The board has also dedicated USD16.5 million towards the purchase of four new super post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes.

Meanwhile, USD3 million will be used for property development required to expand the general cargo business at Savannah's Ocean Terminal, said the GPA.
