The USA’s Federal Motor Carrier Association (FMCSA) has granted a full renewal of SC&RA’s exemption from the 30-minute rest break Hours of Service rule, effective December 10, 2025 through June 17, 2030.
SC&RA said this renewal ensures that OS/OW carriers can safely complete permitted moves without being forced into unnecessary, and sometimes unsafe, stops. Hauliers must download and carry the updated exemption to stay compliant.
FMCA said the exemption covers drivers for all specialised carriers transporting loads that exceed normal weight and dimensional limits – oversize (OS) or overweight (OW) loads or both – and require a permit issued by a government authority. It has analysed the exemption application and the public comments and has determined that the exemption, subject to the terms and conditions imposed, will likely achieve a level of safety that is equivalent to, or greater than, the level that would be achieved absent such exemption.
“This win reflects years of consistent advocacy on behalf of our members. Thank you to FMCSA administrator Derek Barr and the agency’s leadership for their continued partnership,” said SC&RA.
