Thunder Bay eyes more project cargo

May 15 - The Port of Thunder Bay is confident it will attract more project cargoes as it establishes itself as a gateway for abnormal loads bound for western Canada.

Local media reports harbour master Guy Jarvis as saying that his port has recently taken delivery of 15 windmills destined for Bear's Mountain, B.C. and anticipates a busy season of heavy shipments to the city.

The reports indicate that Mr Jarvis believes the attention of shipping companies has been drawn to the port as a result of the ease of transport to all parts east and west, made possible by recent upgrades along the freight corridor.

Improvements made by CN, by widening rock cuttings and fixing up its bridges going to Fort McMurray, would appear to be helping the port and Mr Jarvis indicated that the port will be working with CP [Canadian Pacific Railway] to get more windmills and project cargo throughput.
