TIGER grant funds Duluth renovation

September 11 - The Duluth Seaway Port Authority has been awarded a USD10 million TIGER grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation for the rebuilding and expansion of a general cargo dock at the Port of Duluth, Minnesota, USA.

The fund will be used on a major redevelopment project at Garfield Pier, which will re-establish its structural integrity and connect the 28-acre (11.3 ha) site to existing road and rail infrastructure. The property will be completely resurfaced and its ro-ro dock will be totally renovated, as well as dredging adjacent waters for ship berths. The regeneration will markedly expand the port's ability to handle general cargo, says Duluth Seaway Port Authority.
The redevelopment project will cost USD16 million in total; USD3million will be supplied by the Minnesota Port Development Assistance programme with the balance committed by the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.
Year-to-date, the U.S. Department of Transportation has delivered roughly USD474 million in TIGER grants; eight port development projects have been supported by the grant over the course of 2013.
