Van Oord’s offshore wind installation vessel Boreas has completed its first project, having installed 45 monopiles at Nordseecluster A – the first phase of the 1.6 GW offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

This comes after Van Oord christened Boreas in Rotterdam in June 2025. Contracted to install a total of 105 extended monopiles for the Noordseecluster offshore wind farm, the remaining 60 are set to be installed at the second expansion stage, Nordseecluster B, in 2027.
“With the Boreas now operational and its first assignment successfully completed, we are well-positioned to accommodate the increase in scale in the offshore wind industry,” said Maurits den Broeder, managing director offshore energy at Van Oord.
Alongside Boreas, Van Oord deployed its offshore wind installation vessel Aeolus to install secondary steel at Noordseecluster A. Additional vessels were used for rock installation around the monopile foundations.
The Nordseecluster offshore wind farm is a joint project by RWE (51 percent) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49 percent).
