Having been selected to operate the port’s vehicle and ro-ro terminal in January 2025 and then signed the contract in July 2025, Wallenius Wilhelmsen is looking to develop a regional hub whilst bolstering its logistics network along with the port’s capacity to deliver integrated logistics solutions. Wallenius Wilhelmsen is now operating the terminal through an independent company.

As Scandinavia’s leading hub for vehicle handling, the port of Gothenburg is key to linking the Nordic region with key global markets across the rest of the world. The terminal offers ro-ro and terminal handling services, with phased upgrades planned – with energy-efficient systems, such as EV charging infrastructure, built within the port. GIART has two quay positions, 240,000 sq m of terminal space, rail connectivity, and pre-delivery inspection (PDI) facilities.

“[Wallenius Wilhelmsen] has presented a strong business plan and has credibly demonstrated how they will achieve the volume targets they have committed to and operate a competitive terminal with a customer-centric approach,” said Göran Eriksson, ceo at the port of Gothenburg.

Operating GIART, Wallenius Wilhelmsen intends on forming a partnership with the port of Gothenburg, acting as an integrated supply chain partner and making GIART a go-to hub for all carriers and customers. The contact formally commenced February 2, 2026, and runs for 12 years.

HLPFI reported in December that Wallenius Wilhelmsen had secured contract extensions through 2030.
