July 21 - Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) and WWL ALS have worked together to transport a new Liebherr R9800 mining excavator from its factory in Colmar, France to a site in Durban, South Africa.

The machine components, which measured up to 11 m long and 4 m high, with some units weighing over 100 tonnes, were first transported by road to the river port of Strasbourg, where the cargo was loaded onto a barge for shipment to the port of Zeebrugge.

At the Belgian port, the excavator components were loaded onto Mafi trailers and driven onto WWL's ro-ro vessel Tortugas for shipment to Durban.

Due to strict transport regulations in South Africa creating a small shipping window, WWL ALS stressed the importance of handling the shipment quickly so that delays were avoided at the mine.

This particular Liebherr R9800 model, which was developed for large-scale mining operations, was delivered to Kumba Iron Ore.
