Expansion on cards for Niedersachsen

February 23 - Niedersachsen Ports has invested EUR36 million (USD39.6 million) in the construction of a fourth berth at the Port of Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Niedersachsen Ports has signed a contract with future operator Cuxport - part of the Rhenus Group - for the construction of the new berth, which the company says is required to cope with the increase in cargo operations and throughput of heavy loads for the offshore industry.

Niedersachsen Port will build the new berth infrastructure, including a 240 m long quay and a reinforced bank. The terminal will then be handed over to Cuxport for management.

Construction is expected to take 21 months to complete, with work beginning at the end of April 2016.

Meanwhile, Niedersachsen Ports has also invested in improved infrastructure at the Port of Brake. By September 2016, the German port's south pier is expected to cater for vessels measuring 275 m long with drafts of up to 11.9 m.

A contract for the construction of a new railway overpass is also due to be signed by May of this year, while a new mobile crane will also be put into operation in 2016 to cater for the growing volumes of project cargo at the port.
