Ground has been broken on a terminal expansion project at the port of Long Beach in California, USA, with an additional 19 acres (7.69 ha) of infrastructure being developed.

Carried out by International Transportation Service (ITS), the project – worth USD365 million – will fill a slip in the middle of the Pier G terminal at the Californian port, with a single, continuous wharf measuring 3,400 ft (1,036.3 m) to be built. This will allow it to simultaneously host two large cargo ships.

“ITS has been a trusted tenant for half a century, so the company’s leaders know the port of Long Beach is a good bet,” said Long Beach mayor Rex Richardson. “This investment by ITS will create benefits for decades to come with more cargo moving smoothly without delays and greater opportunities for waterfront labour – union jobs with good, dependable incomes.”

Located in the outer harbour, the ITS terminal is nearly split into two by the south slip, which will be filled with approximately 2.5 million cu yds (1.91 million cu m) of reused sediment from within the harbour district as well as sediments dredged from a local beach.

The project is scheduled for completion in late 2028.
